Assemblyman Keith P. Brown (R,C-Northport) recently expressed his strong support for increasing funding for New York state’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). Brown, along with other New York residents, road workers, and bipartisan lawmakers, opposed Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan to reduce CHIPS funding by $60 million in her Executive Budget.

"Local roads have and will always be essential to commuters, local businesses, our school districts and first responders from all over the state,” said Brown. He highlighted the importance of well-maintained roadways for various institutions, including transportation services, product delivery, and emergency response.

Brown emphasized the significance of adequate funding for road maintenance workers, equipment, and materials to ensure the safety and reliability of New York's roads. He stated, "This is not an area of the State Budget where we should be cutting corners," underscoring the critical role of CHIPS funding in maintaining infrastructure.

In a plea to Governor Hochul, Brown concluded, "As a matter of public safety, I sincerely hope Governor Hochul will reconsider her proposal to cut CHIPS funding this year." The collective message from advocates like Brown is clear: the integrity of New York's infrastructure is at stake if the proposed budget cuts are approved.
