Assemblyman Robert Smullen of the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks addressed the issue of high taxes in New York state on Tax Day, stressing the need for a tax code that supports economic growth and relieves the burden on residents. Speaking at a Tax Day press conference, Smullen emphasized the unfairness of the current tax system, particularly in how it impacts the working class.

Smullen stated, "Every year, me and my Assembly colleagues gather on Tax Day and recognize the burden that high taxes place on New Yorkers across the state. Unfortunately, the way our tax system is set up penalizes success and is completely unfair to the working class. New Yorkers deserve a tax code that promotes economic growth, and as someone who feels strongly on this issue, it is imperative to me to continue pushing for reforms that lower taxes for all."

Highlighting the challenges faced by New Yorkers due to high taxes, Smullen further added, "High taxes continue to be a major concern for New Yorkers and are making it increasingly difficult for residents to live comfortably. Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent and whether those funds are being used efficiently and effectively. We must prioritize transparency and accountability in our state’s financial management."

The event aimed to foster collaboration between local and state lawmakers to address the tax burden and promote financial reforms that benefit all New Yorkers. Transparency and accountability in financial management were underscored as essential elements in ensuring that taxpayer funds are utilized effectively.

As discussions on tax policies continue, the focus remains on creating a tax code that enables New Yorkers to live comfortably and supports economic prosperity across the state.
